Week Notes – 27th June

Monday

Spent the day enjoying Aldeburgh, Suffolk.

Aldeburgh countryside

We’d travelled down on Friday, spending many miserable hours in a car with no air conditioning, battling over-turned caravans and a string of mysterious hold-ups on the A1.

I had intended to travel via the scenic route. But by the time we’d crossed the Humber Bridge I’d lost the will to battle the satnav, which was always intent on dragging me back onto the A1.

I should’ve ditched the tech and bought a road map.

My aunt’s yellow house

Anyway, the family wedding we’d gone for went really well. It was nice to see everyone and we managed to catch-up with my aunt and another family friend on the way home.

It was really hot!

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday

This week I’ve been working on a re-design for Countryside Jobs Service. Despite being one of my oldest customers, I rarely share the work I’ve done for them over the years. Primarily this is because it’s mostly boring data management stuff, which doesn’t really make for interesting reading.

However, we’re now working on a total overhaul of the front-end, as well as a lot of behind the scenes improvements.

It’s an incredibly text-heavy site, handling thousands of job adverts, news items, events and more. The current version was built by myself, quite a while ago now, and most of the design was defined by the CJS team. This time around they’re letting me have a bit more input, which is nice for both of us!

Here’s a screenshot of some work in progress:

Work in progress for CJS

Friday

Catching up on email, more amendments for the CJS team (on the existing site, not the new one).

The Whitby Lit Fest team got together to discuss progress and planning. The email I created to send out to the mailing list got a 100% open rate, which we all agreed was pretty good! The next author announcement is going out on Monday.
