Nature's Laboratory: Digital Transformation on the Factory Floor
A bespoke factory management system and modernised IT infrastructure for a natural medicines manufacturer — replacing spreadsheets with full batch traceability and cutting telephone costs by around 80%.
Delivering a coherent IT system which supports operations
Nature's Laboratory is a leading manufacturer of natural medicines, based in Whitby. Between 2021 and 2024 I worked in-house as Director of Technology, helping the business through a period of rapid change. This case study covers the software and IT systems side of that work; the brand, web and marketing projects are covered separately.
From spreadsheets to a single system. Prior to 2021, the factory ran on Sage and a collection of Excel spreadsheets — managing data, planning production and logging deliveries across disconnected files. Over my three years at the company I designed and built a comprehensive factory management system to bring it all together. The system handles:
- Staff management and HR tasks, including logging hours and managing holiday
- Goods-in record keeping, creating a robust data trail for all raw materials
- Label production for goods in storage and finished products
- Production planning and management
- Website stock level management
- Non-conformance logging
- Certificate of Analysis (COA) production for herbs, liquids, capsules and oils
- Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) production for finished products
- Task management
It's difficult to overstate what this software means for the business. Every batch of raw material is now traceable through the entire manufacturing process, mandatory PDF documentation and labels are produced in moments rather than hours, and processes across HR, stock management and production planning are dramatically streamlined — saving hours of staff time every week. Of everything I achieved at Nature's Laboratory, this is the work I'm most proud of.

Modernising the infrastructure. Alongside the software, I overhauled the factory's wider IT systems: new hardware for core internal systems, robust backup routines for critical data, and general day-to-day support to keep things running smoothly.
The standout change was replacing the original landline telephone system with VoIP. I ported the existing number, set up extensions with individual handsets throughout the factory, and configured call forwarding and voicemail. The immediate impact was a reduction in monthly telephone costs of around 80% — with the added flexibility to add extensions easily and a better experience for customers calling in.
A more resilient business. This work formed a major part of the digital transformation recognised when Nature's Laboratory won 'Best Business Transformation' at the 2023 Scarborough News Excellence Awards. When I left in 2024, I did so knowing the business was in a far more resilient position than I'd found it — with coherent digital record keeping, full traceability, improved revenues and a steady stream of new customers.

This project also shows what's possible when bespoke software is built around how a business actually works, rather than forcing the business to fit off-the-shelf tools. If your organisation is drowning in spreadsheets, a tailored system might transform your operations too.
Jack took time to understand the existing systems before developing a bespoke solution which supports our manufacturing and quality management systems. The software he developed revolutionised our processes.
